Generative AI giant OpenAI announced a new partnership with Oracle, the Austin-based cloud application developer, to develop an additional 4.5 gigawatts of Stargate data center capacity in the U.S. The move signifies a milestone for OpenAI’s Stargate, a company established in January to invest $500 billion in building new AI infrastructure over the next four years.
Oracle was among Stargate’s initial equity backers, alongside SoftBank, OpenAI and MGX. This expansion will combine with the Stargate I site in Abilene, Texas, to bring total Stargate AI data center capacity under development to more than 5 gigawatts. The project will run over 2 million chips.
The expanded project is expected to create more than 100,000 jobs, including full-time roles operating the data center, as well as shorter-term construction positions spanning specialized electrical work, manufacturing and local service roles. Construction has already commenced for the Stargate I site and created thousands of jobs, according to OpenAI.
Parts of the facility are already operational as Oracle began delivering Nvidia GB200 racks in June. Since then, OpenAI has started running early training and inference workloads.
